The drop-minute checklist
How to prepare for a Recreation.gov reservation release
Releases and day-before draws punish improvisation. Run this checklist the night before, then again in the ten minutes before the Official clock — not your phone’s local guess.
Night before
- Confirm the exact product (Which Recreation.gov product is this?).
- Read the drop time and timezone on the agency / Rec.gov page out loud. Set two alarms: T−15 and T−0 in that zone.
- Log into the account; verify email / phone 2FA still works. Add every party member before the drop.
- Confirm a payment method that works; discard expired cards.
- Write the backup ladder on paper (Primary failed).
- Charge laptop + phone. One keyboard for the form, one device for 2FA.
T−15 minutes
- Quit other downloads and video calls.
- Open only the Official product page (and login if needed).
- Disable VPN experiments unless you already know they work for you.
- Have the confirmation folder ready for screenshots.
T−0 click sequence
- Refresh once when the Official clock hits — not fifty times early.
- Enter the flow for the product you already named.
- Do not edit party profiles mid-cart.
- Submit once; wait for the confirmation screen.
- Screenshot order / lottery number before you message anyone.
Timezone traps (read once)
- Mountain, Pacific, Eastern, Hawaii — parks love spelling the zone. Your phone may silently disagree when you travel.
- “Midnight” usually means the start of a calendar day in that zone, not “when I feel tired.”
- If the page says 7:00 a.m. HST, set the alarm in HST — do not translate in your head at T−1.
After submit
- Win / book → I won — now what?
- Miss / sold out → run the backup ladder the same hour.
- Unsure if it worked → check account history before paying a second time.

Evergreen field note — we never invent the drop minute. The Official page owns the clock.
