I won — now what?

I won the lottery on Recreation.gov — what do I do next?

Winning is not the finish line. Many hard tickets award a right to claim or book with a deadline — miss it and the slot returns to the pool while you are still texting the group chat.

Step 1 — Read the award email like a contract

  1. Open the Official confirmation (Recreation.gov or agency portal).
  2. Write down: what you won (product name), for which dates, and any claim / pay / book by deadline.
  3. Screenshot the confirmation and save the order or lottery number offline.

If the email says early-access timeslot (Wonderland-style wilderness products), you won a booking window — not a finished itinerary. You still must build camps in that window.

Step 2 — Decide what kind of win this is

  • Finished reservation — timed entry, parking, some permits already tied to a date. Calendar it; pack toward that day.
  • Claim required — lottery award that expires if you do not accept / pay. Do this before celebrating.
  • Booking timeslot — return at the assigned time with itinerary ready (mileage, camps, alternates).
  • Concession lodging win — different deposit and cancel rules; read the lodge FAQ the same day (Concession vs park layer).

Step 3 — Claim or book before you optimize the vibe

  1. Log into the same account that entered the draw.
  2. Complete claim / payment / itinerary steps on the Official site.
  3. Confirm you receive a second confirmation if the flow has two stages.
  4. Only then adjust car, flights, and partners — not the other way around.

Step 4 — Put hard constraints on a real calendar

  • Trip dates and trailhead sleep the night before.
  • Cancel / change deadlines (often stricter than you hope).
  • Fitness and effort from the place page — a win does not rewrite fit and effort lines.

Step 5 — Keep one backup quiet

Do not abandon the whole backup ladder until claim is confirmed. Awards get reversed for unpaid claims; weather and trail closures still happen. When the reservation is solid, demote backups to “nice if canceled” — not a second primary fee.

If something looks wrong

  • Wrong dates / party — use Official account tools first; screenshot everything.
  • Park alert vs lodge site disagree — trust the stricter safety notice; call or read both layers.
  • No email — check spam, then the account’s reservation / lottery history before re-entering and paying twice.

Evergreen field note — deadlines live on the Official confirmation, not on social posts.
