Official source wins
The managing agency (and Recreation.gov when the product lives there) is authoritative for dates, fees, and whether registration is open. We summarize — always confirm on the official page before you apply.
Trust labels
Every published rate or hard date on a place page should carry one of these labels.
- Official
- Published by an agency (NPS, BLM, USFS, Recreation.gov notice, and so on). We cite them.
- Estimate
- Helpful context that is not a cell from an official results table. Do not treat it as agency data.
- Not confirmed yet
- We list this gate, but we will not show a rate or hard date until an agency figure is in place.
Two clocks
Agency published is when the park or bureau stated the figure. We checked is when we last verified the source in our notes. They are different clocks — both matter. On place pages we show “We checked” when we have that date; we do not show our internal re-check schedule.
This file
The places dataset in this site was last edited 2026-09-23. That is an editorial stamp on our JSON — not a live mirror of Recreation.gov. The agency page still wins for fees, quotas, and whether registration is open.
Apply links
We prefer Recreation.gov when the product lives there. Some iconic gates use another Official channel (for example a concessionaire lodging lottery or an NPS river portal). Buttons then say Apply on official site — still not us applying for you.
Rankings and sorts
Homepage Most sought is editorial — demand and reputation, not a success-rate table. On All places, “Success rate (low–high)” / “Success rate (high–low)” only order places that have an Official or Estimate rate; places without a % sit below.
What we do not claim
- Live open / closed status mirrored from Rec.gov
- Cancellation monitoring or push alerts
- A guarantee you will win or get a permit
