Which Recreation.gov product is this?

Recreation.gov parking vs timed entry vs lottery — how to pick the right one

Same park, five blue buttons, one wrong fee. Recreation.gov is a mall of facilities — parking, timed entry, seasonal lottery, day-before lottery, campground, wilderness. The step that saves money is matching the gate on our place page to the exact product on the live site before you submit.

Step 1 — Name the product, not the park

Write one line: “I need ___ for dates ___.” Examples: vehicle timed entry for Saturday morning; Angels Landing day-before for Tuesday; Mt. Whitney overnight lottery for a July entry. If you can only say “Yosemite” or “Zion,” you are not ready to click.

Step 2 — Open our place page and pick one gate card

  1. Go to All places and open the place.
  2. Read each gate card as a separate SKU. Note kind (lottery / timed-entry / permit) and any apply link.
  3. Choose one primary card for this attempt. Parking is not the hike; day-before is not the seasonal draw.

Step 3 — Follow the Official apply URL

Use the link on that gate card. On Recreation.gov, read the facility title and the about/need-to-know block. Confirm:

  • Does the title match the product you named in Step 1?
  • Is this advance, daily, timed entry, or campsite inventory?
  • Are fees the ones you expect (lottery fee vs reservation fee)?

If the URL lands on a park hub with many facilities, do not grab the first blue button. Search or scroll to the facility that matches the gate name.

Step 4 — Check the sibling traps

  • Parking / shuttle vs entry — some classics need both a legal way in and a trail product (Muir Woods, Maroon Bells-style stories).
  • Seasonal vs day-before — Angels Landing and Wave-style products often split these. Wrong season product is a wasted fee.
  • Campground vs day-use — Cataloochee-style camping is not a valley vehicle lottery. Read the card.

Step 5 — Only then prepare the account and submit

When the product ID and title match your one-line goal, run the drop-minute checklist. If you cannot match titles, stop — reread How to read a place page or The agencies behind hard tickets.

Evergreen field note — facility names change. The live product title wins over memory.
