Closed on Recreation.gov — broken or calendar?

Why is the Recreation.gov button grayed out or closed?

A gray button feels like a broken internet. Most of the time it is the calendar, a suspended product, or the wrong facility. Run this check order before you burn an evening on status blogs.

Step 1 — Confirm you are on the right product

Wrong SKU looks identical to “closed.” Follow Which Recreation.gov product is this? until the facility title matches the gate on our place page.

Step 2 — Read the need-to-know / alerts on that page

Season not open yet — “Available on [date]” or a future release note. Set a calendar reminder; do not refresh hourly.
Outside the booking window — rolling releases often only show a slice of future days. Try scrolling the calendar; the whole season is rarely unlocked at once.
Sold out for that day — inventory gone is not an outage. Check day-before / alternates if the place offers them.

Step 3 — Check for suspension or “not required”

Open the land manager page (NPS / USFS / BLM / state) and our place page. Look for suspended lotteries (Denali road–style stories) or seasons where the ticket is officially not required. Rec.gov may hide or mute the product while the park explains why.

Step 4 — Account and browser hygiene

Log out / in once.
Try a second browser or private window — after you rule out calendar.
Disable aggressive blockers on Rec.gov briefly.
Confirm you are not in a second account that never entered the lottery.

Step 5 — Only then treat it as “broken”

Check Recreation.gov system status / social only as a last glance.
If a drop is live and the page errors for everyone, wait and retry — do not create duplicate carts that fight each other.
Document with screenshots if you need to contact support later.
